Pulling an All-Nighter

A few nights ago my hubby and I pull an all-nighter, the first since my college days when I used to stay up 'til dawn writing for my literature class, working in the dark room for my photography class, or studying for a biology exam. I guess you could say those caffeine-induced, chocolate-filled all-nighters were fun compared to being up until 5 in the morning with a sick toddler.

Our poor little girl suffered the most with being sick, and at 3a.m. she was watching "The Bee Movie" once more (this time with my hubby). As I nursed our newborn listening to the flick downstairs I began to recall the nights I stayed up in college writing. I'm definitely not a night owl, far from it in fact, but on rare occasions my creative mind hits upon a spark and I have to stay up writing until it dwindles out. There is simply no point in trying to go to bed, because I just lay there awake thinking about what I want to be writing and I always end up getting out of bed to write.

But these nightly writing times are very rare, and pulling all-nighters with a sick little one is much harder to do than it was in college. Fortunately my daughter's health seems to be on the upswing this morning, so perhaps in a few days (or a few weeks) I will be inspired to write late into the night again.

I'm sorry your toddler is sick. I stay up a lot writing or reading because my mind gets restless. I do suffer the next day when the kids' energy levels are at full blast. :)

Kimberly,

Not fun with a sick little one. Been there more times than I can count. I had a similar night last night. The words overrode my need to sleep. As my head hit the pillow at 2:30, I was still editing in my head. I have had such writer's block lately that when it flows I know to just go with it. I'm amazed at your ability to keep up with your blog with a newborn and a toddler!
